How to Choose
the Right Wet Mop |
|
|
|
The Tuway family of wet
mops includes a variety of yarns, headbands and construction styles.
To choose wisely, just follow this simple three-step process:
-
Determine cleaning task(s) you want the mop to
perform.
- Review available yarn types and mop construction characteristics.
- Select the mop that best matches your application.

Yarn
Certain yarns are better suited to a specified cleaning task than others.
To get maximum efficiency and value from a wet mop, it`s
important to select the right yarn for the job.
|
|
Cotton |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
 |
Excellent absorption and
retention.
Low initial cost. |
Requires break-in.
Lints and dries slowly.
Subject to mildew and deterioration. |
|
|
|
Synthetic |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
 |
Long-stable fiber for superior
tensile strength, no lint.
No break-in required. |
Higher cost
than cotton.
Poor absorption. |
|
|
|
Rayon |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
 |
Quick absorption and release.
Dries fast, mildew resistant.
Cleaner yarn, lints less. |
Less liquid retention. |
|
|
|
Blends |
Advantages |
Disadvantages |
|
 |
Balanced to provide performance
and durability.
Synthetic fibers add strength. |
May shrink unless pre-laundered.
Requires break-in period. |

Yarn Ply
Yarn ply indicates the number of
strands twisted
together to make a single piece of yarn. More plies provide greater
strength, although higher ply numbers are not a good predictor of higher
yarn quality. A higher-quality, low-ply yarn is invariably better
performing and more cost effective than a lower-quality, high-ply yarn. |
|
|
Twist
Twist refers to how tightly
individual yarns are wound together. While a tightly twisted yarn
might be stronger and more durable, absorbency may suffer. Twist can
be judged only in combination with yarn quality and mop construction. |

Styles
Cut-end mops
are generally lowest
in initial cost. Over time, cut-end mops fray
and unravel, creating lint and leaving loose strands behind. In
addition, cut-end mops leave gaps between yarn strands and have limited
"spread," thus
covering less area per pass. Some models have tailbands, which
reduce these shortcomings. Since cut-end mops should not be
laundered, their useful life is limited.
With Looped-end mops, there are no cut
ends to fry or unravel. A special tailband assures wide, gap-free
"spread" for maximum productivity. Tailband also
eliminates yarn tangling and snagging. Since looped-end mops can be
laundered and reused over and over, they last far longer than cut-end
mops. |

Sizes
Mop size should be matched to cleaning task, mop
wringer and user size. (Remember, premium-grade mops hold up to
five times their weight in water.) In open areas, larger size mops
are generally more efficient. In confined or obstructed spaces,
smaller mops may be more maneuverable and easier to use. |

Headbands
1-1/4" headbands are designed for use with
slide-on or thread-though style handles. They are well suited for
laying finish or applying disinfectants. 5" headbands are
particularly suited to clamp-style handles. The synthetic mesh
material permits nonabrasive scrubbing to help dislodge dirt. |

Wet Mop Categories |
 | Launderable wet mops withstand repeated
launderings while providing maximum on-the-floor performance.
When laundered they will also deliver the best return on investment. |
 | Premium
disposables provide excellent
on-the-floor performance, with durability second only to launderable
mops. |
 | Economy
disposables have a more limited
life span, but deliver good performance at an economical price. |
